Most of the time, our wine buyer's job entails searching out new and interesting wines that can represent value at every price point whilst trying to encompass the broad range of styles that wine can present.

Sometimes though, we get to indulge our inner oligarch.

Although it's a rare occurrence, when the right wine, at the right price, from a reputable source hits our desk, sometimes we just can't help partaking in a little "super-fine" wine buying (just don't tell our accountants!)

This pack represents the absolute apex of our wine lists across the Woodhead group of restaurants. Each bottle has been purchased from trusted sources with whom we have a long-standing relationship. The village in each bottle is perfect and they have all been stored with great care since they were received into our cellars.

There's just one of this pack available and yes, it is very expensive but, we hope for the right person, this could be an extremely exciting addition to their wine cave!

Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Perrieres, Meursault Premier Cru 1990

The Wine

If notes on cellar tracker are to be believed, this wine still packs plenty of punch on the cusp of its third decade. Made in a richer, riper style that suits prolonged ageing. The level on this wine is fantastic and, to our knowledge, it has only been stored in one cellar prior to arriving in ours.

The Vintage

1990 was a bumper crop with a long dry summer leading to some wines feeling a tad overripe. Better producers picked earlier injecting some much-needed freshness into the resulting wines.

Grape: Chardonnay

Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Santenots-du-Milieu, Volnay Premier Cru 1999

The Wine

Despite this village's reputation for a more lifted, floral style, various online tasting notes peg this wine as having much more density and power. Allan Meadows of Burghound notes this was one of Lafon's all-time favourite wines.

The Vintage

An almost perfect vintage barring some poorly timed rain further up the cote. 1999 is a vintage marked by power and precision.

Grape: Pinot Noir

Gaja, Costa Russi, Barbaresco 1978

The Wine

A real piece of history from an age when the Gaja family still made Barbaresco in a more traditional style (not that we want to get involved in "that" debate). Although I haven't had the pleasure of trying this highly rated vintage, an '88 sourced from the same cellar and tasted in 2019 was doing everything you would hope Nebbiolo of this age range would do with plenty of tar, smake and potpourri.

The Vintage

You couldn't ask for a better vintage to lay down. One wine writer notes wines from this vintage will develop "at snail's pace".

Grape: Nebbiolo

Peter Michael, Les Pavots, Knights Valley 2001

The Wine

Clocking in at a hefty 15.5% ABV, this is a big, robust wine. That said, tasting notes Cellar Tracker seems to agree that this wine is in a rather stunning place at present. Still powerful at 19 years of age but beginning to shed some of it's more extracted character.

The Vintage

A great year nestled between two troublesome vintages. Even ripening due to a nice long, cool end to the growing season.

Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc

Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac 1986

Scored at 100 points (by a certain Mr. Parker) not once, but twice! His most recent note (2016) alludes to a wine that still has at least a decade to reach maturity.

Noted as one of the greatest Lafite of the last century by none other than Baron Eric de Rothschild himself.

The Vintage

Another vintage suited for the long run. Many wines were overly dense and tannic upon release but will have settled in the intervening decades.

Grapes: Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot making up the balance.

W&J  Grahams, Malvedos, Vintage Port 1979

The Wine

For a truly outstanding after-dinner tipple. A vintage that verged on the riper end meaning this port may now present slightly more "tawny" characters than most.

The Vintage

Not a widely declared vintage but several single Quintas were produced.

A note: due to the fact that these bottles are sourced from individuals rather than commercial suppliers, we are unable to offer a refund for out of condition or faulty wines.
